My Theory of Design

In theory, the purpose of design is to resolve a given situation. A design must communicate a message in a charismatic and fluent way. Much of the time design will persuade or encourage the audience in a certain direction. The types and styles of design are endless, whether it is “good” or “bad” design is up for interpretation by the viewer. However, whether or not a piece is successful can be determined by the clarity of its expression.

My Design

My goal when designing is to keep everything clean, clear, and cohesive. I believe in the idea of “less is more” – only include essentials, leave out distractions. I strive to portray elements in which the viewer would make connections with in order to understand the message. Inspiration is key; new experiences and possibilities drive my creativity. I must immerse myself into an idea in order to create a rich design. To me, typography is most intriguing. It is challenging yet exciting to explore a word(s) to discover how much more can be implied using color, position, shape, typeface, or even motion. I understand that flexibility is important in order to grow as a designer and to satisfy a client. Although graphics and typography is my strong suite, I also enjoy working in other mediums when the opportunity arises, as I have a strong foundation in studio arts.

More About Me

I grew up in western New York and originally went to school at the University of New York at Fredonia. I credit this university with providing me a quality education and foundation in art and design, despite earning a degree from NC State University. I moved from New York to Orlando in 2008 for two years before ultimately settling in Raleigh, North Carolina.

I am currently the Creative Content Manager and Lead Graphic Designer for the division of Academic and Student Affairs at NC State University. In addition to my full-time job, I also take on freelance projects. I’ve been a member of AIGA since 2016 and have attended three national conferences.

I enjoy music and cooking, but I like them better together. I love to travel and experience new places. I’m happy to call Raleigh my home and grateful for all this city has to offer. My wife and I are fans of the NWSL and are season ticket holders for the NC Courage. I am inspired by political activism and believe I can contribute to making the world a better place by designing for good. Oh, and if the Spice Girls reunite- I will be there for it.
